The Gender Wage Gap: Why Highly Qualified Women Still Earn Less Than Men And Will Most Likely Continue To

Call it gender inequality, but on average, statistics continue to show that women only earn just about 80 cents for every 1 dollar (about 158 naira) that men earn. Exactly why this gap exists is still being discussed and researched.

A study published in the American sociological Review offers an explanation. Research claims that it could be as a result of a reciprocal work hour lag.
The same research shows that men are more likely than women to put in 50 hours or more of work in a week.

Another report by Quartz reported that almost 20% of men worked 50 hours or more per week in year 2000 compared with just 7% of women. Call this a matter of domestic responsibility, but women are less likely to choose positions that demands long hours so as to be able to cope and cater for majority of house work and childcare even when it attracts higher pay and this invariably prevents them from working overtime.

Another interesting fact is that longer hours of work often yield more pay, but more of those who for these durations are men and they tend to be promoted to managerial and professional positions and ultimately increasing their net worth and pay cheque.

Suffice to say that we should blame it on the hardworking quality employers demand, but employers always invariably and are more likely to view these ‘hard workers’ working overtime as valuable assets and believing they are much more worthy of promotion, these employees end up climbing up the corporate ladder-with a fatter pay cheque again.

This ratio has remained largely consistent since the 200s. Indeed, report states that the gender gap changed just twice since 2002 – 2003 when women earned 76 cents for every dollar earned by men and in 2009 when the ratio was at 78 cents.

But recent report again from psychology today has asserted the gap is now at 80 cents.

As a lot of women would like to disagree to this discrimination in the labour market, Dawn Nicholson, HR at PricewaterhouseCoopers – one of the largest auditing firms in the world said;
“The size of the lifetime earnings gap between men and women is disturbing and suggests that women are going backwards versus their male counterparts. If the career path is identical, then it is hard to see why the differential would exist let alone how it could be justified”.

Another report by Wharton suggests that there are more barriers to women getting certain kinds of jobs and that a big part of this is due to some subtle discrimination on the part of the employers.

Another factor pointed out could be gender role specialization which usually shapes our basic beliefs about the behaviours that are most appropriate for men versus women and about the kinds of skills such as flexibility, challenges, work/life balances that accompany these behaviours.

NB: Two researchers surveyed data on 1,225 men and women entering the job market after completing MBA programs from elite and large Universities with the assertion that such groups are from the average populace and is particularly valuable for exploring segregation into some of the best and most influenced jobs in the society which are the best kinds of jobs in which women have traditionally been under-represented.
